Calvin Presbyterian Church began its Summer Trainee Ministry over 20 years ago. It has been an important part of the life of Calvin and has proven to be of great significance in the lives of nearly one hundred young men and women from around the world.

At the heart of the Calvin Summer Trainee Ministry are college-age young people who are employed by Calvin to serve Jesus Christ in a church setting during the summer. While at Calvin, trainees are part of a mentoring program that nurtures their spiritual growth and enhances valuable skills as they develop and implement a varied summer program. Trainees are assigned a field of ministry in which to concentrate for the summer. In that field they have program and personal duties—leading a group, teaching a class, and spending time with the people. Trainees are paid a stipend for their work, plus they receive room and board in the home of one or more Calvin Church families.

The purpose of the Trainee Ministry is two-fold. One goal is for the Trainees, in their areas of concentration, to add energy, experience, and a new perspective to an ongoing or new ministry of Calvin. This often is with youth or children, but may be with another group.

The second goal of the program is for the Trainees to grow in spiritual depth—developing ministry, personal, and church service skills. A great deal of effort is given to the mentoring, teaching, training, and spiritual development of the Trainees.

Become a Summer Trainee

If you or someone you know would like to be considered for a summer of adventure, learning, growing, stretching, and serving, we invite you or them to apply. The application process consists of completing and submitting a Trainee application. The Trainee Ministry Team will prayerfully review the applications and conduct interviews. Applicants must have a deep personal commitment to Jesus Christ and be willing to work hard with others who share that commitment.

Prayerfully consider this opportunity for yourself or for someone you care about!

Interviews and job offers are usually done in April-May each spring.

For more information and an application, go to Downloads, Summer Trainees on this website. There you can download a 2-page brochure in pdf format. The Trainee Application can be downloaded in either a Word template (*.dot) or Adobe Acrobat (*.pdf) format.

If you have any questions, phone or email the Trainee Ministry of Calvin Presbyterian Church at trainees@calvinpc.org. The primary contact person is Kathi Bonallo, Director of Youth Ministries.

You … and the Summer Trainees

How Calvin Members Can Support the Trainee Ministry

The goal of the trainee ministry is to inspire and help equip the Trainees for a lifetime of effective Christian ministry and to enhance the ministries of Calvin, especially for children and youth, through the service of the Trainees. Calvin’s ability to accomplish these goals is dependent on the your prayer support and on the involvement of many families and individuals from the congregation. Be open to God’s call!

  • Host a trainee for all or part of the summer
  • Be a prayer partner for a trainee
  • Be an adult assistant at children’s and/or youth events
  • Drive your car or the bus for events
  • Invite trainees to dinner or other family events
  • Take a trainee out to coffee
  • Contribute meal coupons for their contact work
  • Invite them on a sightseeing tour

Please call Kathi Bonallo, Calvin Youth Director, through the church office 206-542-6181 to volunteer!

When God calls, He also equips!
